MUSIC. PEOPLE. CONNECTED.
SOCAN SERVES MUSIC CREATORS, MUSIC PUBLISHERS AND VISUAL ARTISTS, ENSURES USERS ARE LICENSED TO PLAY, AND COLLECTS/DISTRIBUTES ROYALTIES IN CANADA AND WORLDWIDE.
WHO WE ARE
We believe that Canada’s music creators and visual artists are responsible for a truly priceless source of our national pride and culture. Canada’s songwriters, composers and music publishers, along with visual artists, are the lifeblood of the creative ecosystem that generates upwards of an estimated billion dollars every year to our economy.
As Canada’s largest rights management organization, we connect more than four million creators worldwide and more than a quarter-million businesses and individuals in Canada alone. More than 150,000 songwriters, composers, music publishers and visual artists are our direct members, and more than 100,000 organizations are licensed to play music across the country. We issue licenses for the performance and reproduction of music as well as for the reproduction of visual art.
SOCAN serves and champions music creators, music publishers, and visual artists. We advocate for them, and we work to defend and protect their rights, so that they can be compensated for their hard work – the music we all love to listen to, and the artistic work that we appreciate, love and prosper from spiritually to economically. Through direct affiliations and reciprocal agreements, we also license the performance and reproduction of musical works and collect and distribute royalties in Canada and throughout the globe. We also have reciprocal agreements with visual arts rights collectives around the world.
With a concerted use of progressive technology and unique data as well as a commitment to lead the global transformation of rights’ management, with wholly-owned companies Audiam and MediaNet, we are dedicated to upholding the fundamental truths that music and visual arts have value and creators and publishers deserve fair compensation for their work.
Our nearly 350 staff across North America work to provide our members with the support that they need so that they can continue to create and publish great and valuable art.
We are headquartered in Toronto, with branch offices located in Montréal, Vancouver, Los Angeles as well as subsidiary offices in New York and Seattle. We also operate the popular “SOCAN House” program in Los Angeles, Nashville, and Paris, to accommodate SOCAN members visiting these cities to further their songwriting career/craft.
SOCAN is a leader in the global transformation of music rights. We continue to improve and outpace the present and anticipate the future. We track billions of online micro-transactions every few days, and our ownership of rights-tech companies Audiam and MediaNet ensures that our members continue to get paid even faster, even more accurately, and even more transparently.
To better and more efficiently serve our members and businesses Licensed To Play by SOCAN, we expanded into administering reproduction rights (as well as performance rights) by acquiring SODRAC in July 2018.
SOCAN’s database of nearly 50-million industry identification codes, 67-million sound recordings, and 33-million compositions is far larger than that of any other music rights organization on the planet. We’re in position to offer access to this powerful data to other organizations that can benefit from our services.
With already strong data management, we continue to invest in developing technologies that strengthen our capabilities, so that we can offer other businesses access to our core services – such as data matching, distribution, licensing, and payment processing.
